CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE
A new star on the horizon...
Since her introduction in 1966, the Columbia 50 has piled up an impressive
record of wins and triumphed against so-called "unbeatable" class ocean
racers in spite of formidable odds.
Design breakthrough...
Bill Tripp's design borders on what yachting experts consider a design breakthrough
as far as maximum effective waterline. The Columbia 50 has a sea-kindly
hull with a minimum of wetted surface, one of the highest aspect ratios
in today's production racers and an unusually high ballast to displacement
ratio (almost 50%). As a result the Columbia 50 points a handy 5° to 10°
higher than many of today's best class boats. A specially designed deep
spade rudder assures her of positive and easy control off the wind.
Racing thoroughbred...
Flush deck... divided cockpit to separate the helmsman from the hustle of
the sheet tenders... powerful masthead rig... efficiently planned deck layout
and specially designed racing equipment are just a few of the many features
that contribute to Columbia 50's performance.
Comfortable cruiser...
But the Columbia 50 is not just a stripped down racing machine. When her
owners are not winning races, she doubles as a luxurious cruising yacht
with accommodations for 8. And more important...Columbia 50's fine entry
and seaworthy hull lets you cruise in comfort without pounding, especially
when going to weather. This is the first fiberglass ocean racer/cruiser
that is completely comfortable... fast enough to win ocean races... and
not too big to be owner-maintained.
